What is an Ambivert?
Both Introvert and Extrovert are personality types defined by Carl Jung’s theory. However, many people might not identify fully as either Introvert or Extrovert. Sometimes they feel more like an Introvert, and other times more like an Extrovert. This middle-ground personality is known as an Ambivert.
Characteristics of Ambivert Personality
An Ambivert’s personality falls between Introvert and Extrovert, meaning they are adept at adapting. If they need to participate in social activities due to work or certain responsibilities, they can do so, but they also crave privacy. Likewise, if they need to think analytically or work alone, they can excel. In other words, they have two personalities within themselves and can draw upon the necessary one when the situation calls for it.
Distinct Traits of Ambiverts
1.Good Listener and Communicator
Extroverts prefer to talk more, while Introverts prefer to observe and listen. Ambiverts, however, understand the situation and know when to speak and when to listen. They might start a meeting with a brief motivational speech and then offer employees the chance to speak, ask questions, or share their thoughts fully.
2.Ability to Adapt Behavior to Situations
Adapting to different people or situations comes naturally to Ambiverts. For example, when in an elevator with strangers, an Extrovert might start with a small smile and some small talk, while an Introvert might put on earbuds to avoid interaction. An Ambivert could do either, depending on who the other person is or the situation—whether it requires silence or getting to know someone.
3.Balancing Act
In conversations, Ambiverts can break the silence or start conversations without making Introverts feel uncomfortable, maintaining a balance in social dynamics.
4.Natural Empathy
Ambiverts naturally possess empathy, understanding others’ feelings effortlessly. For instance, if a friend has a problem, an Extrovert might try to offer a solution immediately, and an Introvert might be a good listener. An Ambivert would listen thoughtfully and propose a solution after considering it carefully.
5.Comfortable in Social Settings but Also Value Alone Time
Suppose a friend calls with a last-minute invite to go out. An Extrovert would accept immediately without hesitation, and an Introvert might decline to stay home. An Ambivert would weigh the pros and cons and might either go out or stay in.
Ambiverts are well-suited for various roles, especially as mediators between Introverts and Extroverts. They are flexible, possessing deep-thinking traits like Introverts while also being sociable and having good negotiation skills like Extroverts. Therefore, organizations often prefer Ambiverts. However, this doesn’t mean Introverts and Extroverts are less desirable, as each personality type has its strengths and can contribute to an organization. As the saying goes, “Put the right man on the right job.”
